Whitewashed villages, endlessly varied landscapes and unforgettable food make Greece one of the most loved sailing destinations in the Mediterranean. Here are five things worth knowing before you plan your trip.
1. Consider a flotilla
Sailing in a flotilla is a relaxed way to explore a cruising area together with a group of other sailors, each on their own yacht. Flotilla leaders give a morning briefing on weather and route, along with local tips, like the best swimming spots and the calmest lunch anchorages. Daily distances are usually short, leaving plenty of time to explore each new village on arrival. Joining the group for dinner isn't compulsory, but it's a nice way to make the trip feel social, especially for families, since kids tend to make friends quickly within the group.
2. Sail with a skipper
Not confident your sailing skills are quite there yet? Charter with a skipper. Good charter providers always have experienced skippers available, and you can add one to a flotilla booking too. The skipper joins after the morning briefing and helps out through the day, then returns to their own boat once you're moored or anchored. It's a great way to learn hands-on, and takes the pressure off sailing unfamiliar waters on a boat you don't know yet, even if it's just for the first few days.
3. Brush up on the basics before you go
Most people planning a sailing holiday have sailed before, but sharpening your knowledge beforehand is never a bad idea. If you're joining a flotilla, the route and logistics are largely taken care of for you, which frees up time in your preparation to focus on the theory and practical skills that will make you feel more confident on board.
4. Time it around the Meltemi
Greece's summer winds, known as the Meltemi, pick up especially in July and August, bringing steady breeze that's popular with confident sailors but can be more challenging for beginners. If you're new to sailing, late spring or early autumn often means calmer conditions.
5. Pick your cruising ground deliberately
From the Ionian's gentler, greener islands to the more exposed, dramatic Cyclades, Greece's sailing areas each have a very different character. Matching the cruising ground to your experience level and the kind of trip you want makes a real difference to how the week feels.
