6 tips for booking the right sailing holiday

Sailing yacht ready for a charter holiday

Booking your first sailing holiday can feel overwhelming, with so many options and so little to compare them against. Here are six things worth knowing before you book.

1. Ask for options across different price ranges

If you don't yet have a feel for pricing, ask for proposals across a few different budgets. An older yacht isn't automatically a worse yacht, and a newer one isn't automatically in great condition. Look closely at the boat itself, its fit-out, the age of the sails, and who's actually behind the listing. A charter provider with years of experience, or a local presence at the destination, knows far more than just the name and a photo of the yacht.

2. Avoid slow-responding providers

Few things are more frustrating than sending an enquiry and waiting days, sometimes weeks, for a reply. If you're interested, you want to move forward with your family or friends. A good charter provider is reachable most days of the week: a slow response is an early warning sign, and your holiday effectively starts the moment you begin looking.

3. Choose experience and professionalism

Experience with this specific type of holiday is essential. Look for a provider who can talk you through the whole trip, not just help you pick a yacht: how check-in works, mooring options along the way, the best destinations, where to eat. Trust your instinct in those first conversations.

4. Sort out your sailing qualification

A common misconception is whether you actually need a sailing licence to charter a yacht abroad. Rules vary by country, but as a general standard, most Mediterranean charter destinations require at least one person on board to hold a recognised qualification, typically an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) or equivalent. You can't rent a car without a driving licence; chartering a yacht works the same way. Sorting this out well in advance avoids a stressful surprise at check-in.

5. You don't have to sail yourself

Even if you can't sail, you can still take a sailing holiday, alone or with friends and family. Crewed and flotilla options let you hire one or more cabins, or the whole yacht, with an experienced skipper handling the sailing.

6. Read the small print on what's included

Ask exactly what's covered in the price, and what isn't. Final cleaning, bed linen, fuel, and check-in packages are commonly charged separately, better to know upfront than be surprised at checkout.
