Gulf of Naples and Amalfi Coast sailing route

Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi Coast

This sailing tour starts from the Naples region, home to several departure harbours. After checking in, you'll set off for the sunny, colourful island of Procida, the smallest of the Phlegraean Islands.

Day 1: Naples, Procida, Ischia

This sailing tour starts from the Naples region, home to several departure harbours. After checking in, you'll set off for the sunny, colourful island of Procida, the smallest of the Phlegraean Islands, sitting between the mainland and the larger island of Ischia just a few kilometres away. The most picturesque spot on the island is Corricella: from the boat, you'll see a thin strip of colourful fishermen's houses built right against the cliff. For an anchor or lunch stop, head to a bay on the island's northwest side, Cala del Pozzo Vecchio, a picturesque round bay where part of the film Il Postino was filmed. For the night, sail on to the large, green island of Ischia, with its harbour at Casamicciola, where the evening comes alive.

Day 2: Ischia to Sorrento

After breakfast, explore the island. Beyond sandy beaches and blue water, Ischia also has spa resorts and natural thermal springs with healing properties, a legacy of its volcanic past. Sail past the beautiful Castello Aragonese and Forio on the island's west coast; Lacco Ameno sits in the northwest, and Sant'Angelo, the island's most characterful village, in the south. After lunch and a swim, head for the well-known town of Sorrento, spending the night in the old harbour.

Day 3: Sorrento to Capri

Sorrento sits on a plateau above the sea, overlooking the Bay of Naples. After breakfast, perhaps a walk through the village and a bit of shopping, before leaving Sorrento to cross to the island of Capri. Capri is by far the most beautiful island here, a stylish destination of myths, seafaring charm and dreamy sea views. On a warm summer evening, wander past exclusive boutiques alongside Capri's elite, and let the colours of the water beneath the cliffs and the charming villas and gardens work their magic. Staying the night means experiencing a different Capri, once the day-trippers leave, a certain calm settles over the island. Make time for a drink on the famous Piazzetta and perhaps dinner at one of the many fine restaurants.

Day 4: Capri

Waking up in Capri has its own magic. Spend the day exploring the island's famous bays, including the Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), for a swim. Lunch on the south side by the Faraglioni rocks, or at the blue-and-white beach restaurant Il Riccio, which holds a Michelin star. Afterwards, relax in the sun, swim, or visit Punta Carena and Marina Piccola. You can also sail around the island to Punta Massullo to see the striking red Villa Malaparte, set into the rock and one of the finest examples of Italian modern architecture. In the evening, relax and dine on board.

Day 5: Capri, Nerano, Positano

Capri and Punta Campanella are only a few miles apart. Punta Campanella opens onto "La Costiera", the Amalfi Coast, where you'll experience the beauty of the sea and the softness of this fragrant, colourful coastline. After a swim stop and lunch in the beautiful bay of Jeranto and Marina del Cantone at Nerano, continue on to the enchanting town of Positano, anchoring for the night if conditions allow. The pastel colours, primrose, pink, terracotta, peach and white, give the town a theatrical look found nowhere else. Surrounded by lush gardens and secluded terraces, enjoy a sunset drink, or stay for dinner and let Positano's magic take over.

Day 6: Positano, Amalfi, Li Galli

After a full breakfast, sail out to visit the Li Galli archipelago, three small islands just off Positano within the protected Punta Campanella area. After lunch, a swim and some relaxation on one of the many beautiful beaches around Positano, continue on to the town of Amalfi, where you can moor at the pontoon. Visit the town and its impressive Roman Catholic cathedral on Piazza del Duomo, or take the 6-kilometre walk to the refined resort town of Ravello. Stop for sunset drinks or dinner overlooking the Amalfi Coast.

Day 7: Amalfi, Sant'Angelo d'Ischia, Naples

Sail back via Ischia, passing Positano, Nerano and Punta Campanella on the way to Naples. Stop for lunch at one of the many beaches along the coast, or in the small harbour of the picturesque Sant'Angelo d'Ischia, an old fishing village turned popular destination, known for its square, narrow colourful streets and understated charm.

Day 8: Sant'Angelo d'Ischia to Naples

The final day: disembarking, farewells and last photos, with the timeless charm of the Amalfi Coast still fresh in mind.
